Katherine Grant Salon and Spa

Katherine Grant opened her salon a few years back and recently moved to a new location (Park Hill area in North Little Rock).  Since she got a new place and expanded her business, she thought it was time for a new website and some new pictures.  Luckily, we’re friends and so I got to be the one to take pictures for her.

Thanks for letting me shoot your new place!  And if I had hair I would totally get it cut here…

Life – Dinner with the Family

Lately, I’ve started to realize the more and more I take pictures, the less and less I take pictures of the daily events in my own life.  I’ve decided to challenge myself to take pictures when I’m with family, friends, or whoever, because honestly, they’re probably the only pictures that will mean a lot to me years down the road.

So I’m beginning a “Life” series (no not like the Discovery Channel).  It will be pictures that consist of my life and those closest to me.  It won’t be an everyday thing but hopefully it will be fairly consistent (which will be tough with wedding season coming up).

The first is a dinner I had at my parents’ house yesterday.  It’s not normal for all of us to be able to get together, especially outside of major holidays, so we decided to eat dinner.  Of course, in normal motherly fashion, my mom made way too much.  .

For New Photographers

When new photographers ask for advice on their images (don’t worry…it doesn’t happen that often) I tend to say the same things. So I decided to just write a quick blog on those specific areas. Now this is brief and may be elementary for some, but if you want to go more in depth or have some questions just shoot me a message on my contact page!

White Balance

(This is assuming you are shooting in RAW)  Whites are supposed to be white! If your client’s white shirt has a hint of yellow, blue, green, or any other color than white, adjust your tones. This will fix your issue of people’s skin tones looking a little off and will help the image look like it suppose to look (this is of course assuming you want people to look as natural as possible…I understand some people may want to get a little artsy).

Exposure

9 times out of 10 I find that a lot of new photographers don’t expose their images enough. Don’t be scared! Bump it up…make the image pop! It will turn your flat image into a great picture…

Shoot Like It’s Film

Sometimes it’s easy to get click-happy or look at an image and say “Oh I’ll just fix it Lightroom”. Now unless you like spending a bazillion hours in PS or LR editing photos, fix the image on the front end. If you have a perfectly exposed, focused, and white balanced image from the camera, you’ll spend no time editing. Act like you can’t fix it later and this is all you got. Believe me…it will help you become a better photographer (oh and please please please shoot in manual…it might be tough at first but it’s worth it).

Photoshop Actions

Don’t do it. No really. You don’t learn anything by clicking a “play” button. Believe it or not, everything that action does that you just paid for, you can do yourself. If you want to spend time in Photoshop, learn what it can do and do it yourself. Then every image will be unique to you and it will be just the way you want it. But really…don’t.

Timeless Images

People want their images to look good ten years from now. It’s what they are going to have their whole life! So even though certain hues and tones may be “in” right now…it might not be “in” a few years down the road…just something to think about.

So that’s about it!  Now this is, of course, my own opinion and others may disagree totally.  But if you just want to some good, clean images, take this advice for what it’s worth and keep shooting!

(can you tell I haven’t shot a wedding in a while?  I generally start taking pictures of everything else until the wedding season starts…so I hope you enjoy the blog for a couple more  months!)

Midwest Caravan/Falcon Scott/Futuro Boots

So this post is WAY behind! Like 6 months behind! Either way, it’s finally on the blog.

This had to be one of the most fun shows I’ve been to in a really long time. That may be because I’m pretty good friends with everyone in these bands, but either way we had a blast! This is something I’m not use to shooting so this was good for me to stretch some skills and learn a few things. Here are a few images!

(and links to the bands’ myspace pages…just click their names: Midwest Caravan, Falcon Scott, Futuro Boots)

No Shoe For You!!

(bonus points to the person who gets the joke in the title)

For some reason, my wife and I enjoy taking pictures of the shoes of our clients (I think you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes).  So I decided to dedicate a whole blog post on exactly that.  So enjoy the shoes of this past year!

Northern Arkansas

I recently got back from, what seems to have become an annual tradition with myself and a few of my friends, the Jasper area in northern Arkansas.  We like to go in the winter because most of the cabins are open (too cold for people to float the buffalo river) and, for anyone who is familiar with Arkansas summers, no humidity.

I only took a couple shots and I do realize this is quite different than the rest of my posts, but this is probably my favorite part of Arkansas (even if we almost hit an elk one night).  There’s really no where else like it.

Jamie and Jessica

Here’s another couple I’m quite fond of.  I’ve known Jamie for years (he was a roommate as well) and he’s taught me a lot about a passion for the Lord, faith, and life.  I’m pretty sure this couple could already write a book about their journey (well anyone could when a relationship  starts while she’s in Nashville and he’s in Africa for two years!).  Thank you both for your friendships and you have no idea how stoked I am that I get to take pictures for your wedding…congrats!
